Travel Review: The Kasturi in Cherating, Malaysia

Malaysia has an abundance of public holidays but with the current economy, traveling outside of Malaysia can burn a hole in your pocket; by choosing to visit local locations, not only are you stimulating the Malaysian economy by supporting local businesses but you’re also discovering the slogan, “Malaysia, Truly Asia” while simultaneously deepening your bond with your home country. For those interested in a beach holiday nearby, Cherating may prove to be your go-to so that being said, here’s more information on:

The Kasturi

How To Get There: You can either fly to Kuantan or Kuala Terengganu then hire transport to The Kasturi (a one hour or two hours drive, respectively) or you can drive from Kuala Lumpur to Cherating (around two and a half to three hours).

Currency: Malaysian Ringgit

What To Expect: A secluded haven nestled between lush greenery and hugged by the ocean, The Kasturi seamlessly combines the natural with the man-made; even incorporating trees into the architecture of each villa. Art, ranging from intricate woodwork to vibrant canvases, decorates the compound whereas aesthetically exposed wood, rattan, and bamboo creates an eco-friendly atmosphere.

The Kasturi also has an in-house spa, which offers a variety of massages – recommended would be the Swedish massage, lasting an hour.

Additional Information: Although The Kasturi creates an atmosphere of tranquility, a local village thrives minutes away from the compound, offering various options for food and drinks. However, the resort offers Malaysian, and Western, delicacies for breakfast and dinner so venturing out becomes a second choice.

As The Kasturi is still a work in progress, more amenities are being added, even an entire wheelchair accessible villa specified for the handicapped.

Price: Mid Range to Luxury, depending on the accommodation chosen

Other Recommendations: Located besides the resort, guests of The Kasturi can visit the Rimbun Dahan Turtle Hatchery for free; the sanctuary houses the eggs of turtles as unfortunately, a market for those eggs exist. However, by creating a safe space, the sanctuary ensures the livelihood of the Malaysian turtles as every hatched turtle returns to the ocean – visitors are allowed to view the hatching process and can momentarily hold a turtle, even name it, before releasing it back to Mother Nature.

Within the vicinity of the hotel, a local river curves around the trees to meet the ocean; albeit random, otters have made that river their home and if you’re lucky, you can observe those otters in the wee hours of the morning. To add to that experience, glowing fireflies can also be spotted at night but do check with reception for more details on the location.
