As a lover of lists with an indecisive personality (especially when the options are food, food, food), I figured a ‘top three’ review would appease every other indecisive food lover so here are my favorite duck dishes that can be found in Kuala Lumpur:
- Village Roast Duck, Bangsar Village II
What To Order: Crispy Aromatic Duck with Pancakes
Why: From personal experience, finding a satisfying duck dish in Malaysia (on par with overseas, mainly European, standards) can prove to be a hard task but these duck pancakes are bursting with flavours! Each side offers a different element to appreciate: just the hoisin sauce brings comfort in the familiar taste and the duck meat, on the other hand, is tender yet juicy but not overwhelming in taste, either, while the pancake itself allows all the different aspects to soak together, through the thin texture, and have you craving for more. I have been frequenting this establishment for years now and the consistency offered is also something else to appreciate!
Overall Flavours: Excellent
Portion: The portion varies according to the size you order – your options being portion, half or whole duck
Staff Efficiency: Good
Ambiance: Average – although located in Bangsar, this restaurant doesn’t hide behind bright decorations or unique interiors but instead, is simple and focuses on their flavours
Pricing: Cheap (RM0 – RM20) to Expensive (RM60 – RM100 and above)
Additional Information: This restaurant is non-halal so the choice to ignore the pork dishes and indulge instead with the duck dishes is all yours
- Way Modern Chinois, Damansara
What To Order: Truffle Roast Duck
Why: Having been recently introduced to this restaurant by my cousin and her family (thank you, again), I look forward to every visit! There is nothing quite like the combination of truffles with fatty, juicy duck – the truffle is literally infused within each bite and that is an experience you will have to try for yourself while I am now about to salivate, daydreaming about this delicious dish…
Overall Flavours: Excellent
Portion: The portion varies according to the size you order – your options being half or whole duck
Staff Efficiency: Average
Ambiance: Good – every detail about this establishment is modern, from the interiors to the music being played
Pricing: Cheap (RM0 – RM20) to Expensive (RM60 – RM100 and above)
Additional Information: The truffle duck has to be ordered 24 hours in advance
- Dancing Fish, Bangsar Shopping Center
What To Order: Bebek Goreng Bali (Crispy Duck)
Why: Although nothing can compare to authentic Balinese Bebek Goreng, this dish is almost as good – the crisp of the duck skin is undeniable and as soon as you have a bite, you will be sneakily trying to take as much as possible without your companion(s) knowing (or maybe that’s just me)! The combination of the spiced duck with the simple, all-time-favourite side of warm white rice really blends the flavours together, especially as the sambal (which isn’t spicy) adds a surprise burst.
Portion: The portion varies according to the size you order – your options being half or whole duck
Staff Efficiency: Average
Ambiance: Average – the exterior of this restaurant is fronted by a wall of faux grass whereas the interiors are sleek and simple
Pricing: Cheap (RM0 – RM20) to Expensive (RM60 – RM100 and above)
